PROJECT
Safety Suite Software UI
A new way of monitoring safety in real time
The challenge
Design a centralised software solution (either on-premise or cloud-based) that enables real-time remote monitoring of assets and worker safety, leveraging the power of connectivity to help save lives.

Research revealed a fragmented ecosystem - multiple systems connected some assets to software, but with little synergy and minimal emphasis on worker safety.
The objective was to create a unified system capable of monitoring key aspects of worker safety, connected equipment, and compliance. It also needed to enhance situational awareness and streamline operational workflows.

My role
-
OVOCs (Transport and Oil & Gas industries).
-
Identified personas and user requirements.
-
Defined task models and user journeys.
-
Shaped Information Architecture.
-
Designed data visualisations.
-
Led UX/UI design and prototyping of:
-
Customisable dashboards.
-
Predictive plume modelling.
-
Event playback functionality.
-
Alert and alarm systems.
-
Voice, email and SMS messaging systems.
-
Geofencing for restricted/hazardous areas.
-
Toxicant concentration heat mapping.
-
Nearby team collaboration features.
-
Real-time monitoring modules.
-
...and more.
-
-
Conducted usability testing.
-
Collaborated with global cross-functional teams.
-
Engaged in stakeholder alignment and management.
The solution
Customer observations were conducted on-site in the UK and the Netherlands to better understand operational workflows, uncover pain points, and define key personas and requirements.

Participation in PI planning sessions with the software engineering team and Offering Managers in China helped foster alignment and enthusiasm for the proposed designs, while also building strong rapport with key stakeholders.

I designed a customisable user interface that enables users to adjust display polarity based on ambient lighting, interact with dashboard tiles to prioritise critical information, and drill down into granular data views among many other features.

User experience was central to the solution, driven by a deep understanding of user goals and translated into efficient interactions, consistent design patterns, optimised information architecture, intuitive data visualisations, and visual clarity.

The results
Safety Suite was successfully launched within tight timeframes and was enthusiastically received by customers. The fully customisable dashboard was described as “excellent” by Shell.

Users gained clear visibility of critical information at the level of detail most relevant to their roles, delivered through a cohesive design system and a visually engaging interface. Safety managers are now alerted to incidents in real time, enabling them to respond swiftly and effectively.
“Working in very short time frame and with limited input, Rob crafted crisp, visually compelling and comprehensive designs that the sales team were able to show the customer within a week. Shell (the customer) thought the work was excellent and the team believes that this will give Honeywell an edge against the competition.”
